The Ontario High School Education System

The Ontario Secondary School program is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills they will need to lead satisfying and productive lives after school. The program prepares students for further education, work, and also helps them to become independent, productive, and responsible members of society. All students in Ontario are required to remain enrolled in secondary school until the age of 18. This leads to the successful completion of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
To be awarded the OSSD, a total number of 30 credits are needed in addition to the completion of 40 hours of community involvement activities as well as meeting the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) requirements:

A. Total credit requirement for OSSD: A total of 30 credits are required to obtain the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
B. Compulsory credit requirements: Of the total number of credits, 18 are compulsory.
C. Optional credit requirements: Of the total number of credits, 12 are optional.

E. All students must complete a minimum of 40 hours of unpaid community involvement activities before graduating from high school.

What do you need to graduate?

18 Compulsory Credits
  • 4 credits in English – 1 credit per grade
  • 3 credits in Mathematics – 1 credit in grade 11 and 12
  • 2 credits in Science
  • 1 credit in Canadian History
  • 1 credit in Canadian Geography
  • 1 credit in the Arts
  • 1 credit in Health and Physical Education
  • 1 credit in a Second Language
  • 0.5 credit in Career Studies
  • 0.5 credit in Civics

What else do you need to graduate?

  • 12 Elective Credits (optional courses)
  • 40 hours of Community Service
  • Grade 10 Literacy Test (OSSLT) or The Literacy Course (OLC4O)
  • Proof of English Proficiency (IELTS/TOEFL)
  • This is for university and college admissions

  • Levels A – E
  • ESL courses are 6 weeks long: you will finish 2 ESL courses in 1 full semester
